  • Warden House
    The house where the warden of the first prison stayed, is situated in Meintjies Street, the main street of town. A few years ago it housed the Local Tourism Information Office.
  • VCA Hall
    It was built as a home for Lord French, by Lord Kitchener’s Master builder during the 1899 – 1902 Anglo Boer War. When the war was drawing towards its end, many local residents felt that the ex-volunteers should be welcomed back home and some form of memorial to be instituted for those who did not return.   • British Military Pumping Station
    The pumping station was erected in about 1904 by the British troops that were stationed at Grootfontein. Its site is the marshland from which the actual “Groote Fontein” springs.
  • Transkaroo Adventures
    Since 1993 Transkaroo Adventures have offered tourists and youth groups a unique opportunity to experience the most breathtaking and surprising scenes in the Upper Karoo.
  • Graveyard of Farm Driefontein
    Follow the road past the caravan park (Hill Street) to the first graveyard behind Ouberg Hill where the first inhabitants of Driefontein, on which Middelburg was founded, lay buried.
  • Sherborne Guest House
    Sherborne Guest House is situated between Colesberg and Middelburg on the N9 + N10 route – 80km south from Colesberg and 17km north of Middelburg. The guest house is about 500m from the route above and is between numerous trees and hills. Come and enjoy your vacation on a true Karoo farm.
  • Persies Grave
    Mr. & Mrs. Joubert lived in their small house opposite Dagbreek Hostel, next to Middelburg High School. They were already pensioners, and never had any children. They raised a Persie-lamb as if it was their child.
  • Karoo Country Inn
    The ideal overnight stop for those travelling to Johannesburg from Durban, Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route and Cape Town. Built in 1853, this is a beautifully restored Cape Victorian hotel.   • Town Graveyards
    Two, the old and new graveyards. Old: van Reenen Street New: Turn down in Church Street, follow the road around the old railway station building, and you’ll find it on your left hand side.

  • Mount Melsetter Karoo House
    Mount Melsetter provides a superb venue to break away from the pressures of your normal day to day living. The Karoo House lies under the gaze of Mount Melsetter itself, which rises to just over 5000 feet, a landmark looming large over the surrounding Karoo, due east of Middelburg.
  • Schoombeesklip
    This rock is the oldest landmark of the occupation by the first European inhabitants. This inscription reads: “Anno 170 ik ben die plaas heft aangeleyght A.G.S.B. uyt Denemark sprenghane als sant.” Andries Godliep Schoombee fled from Denmark after the supposed death of his brother whom he threw from the window of their double-storey house after a fight.
