  • Old Waterpump
    Queen Victoria gave this gift to the town in 1887 when she had reigned for 50 years. The Victoria- and Jubilee Streets have been named then. The water pump can be seen in the Mayor’s Garden.
  • Rock Art
    Rock art and fossils can be seen at some farm accommodation establishments in the area.
  • No. 6 on Church Self Catering
    No. 6 on Church is a cottage that was built in the mid-1800s, and in 2015 it was completely renovated to its current form as a self-catering unit. Where possible, the original woodwork was retained, giving rise to clean-cut modern accommodation with an old Karoo flavour.
  • Schoombeesklip
    This rock is the oldest landmark of the occupation by the first European inhabitants. This inscription reads: “Anno 170 ik ben die plaas heft aangeleyght A.G.S.B. uyt Denemark sprenghane als sant.” Andries Godliep Schoombee fled from Denmark after the supposed death of his brother whom he threw from the window of their double-storey house after a fight.
  • Graveyard of Farm Driefontein
    Follow the road past the caravan park (Hill Street) to the first graveyard behind Ouberg Hill where the first inhabitants of Driefontein, on which Middelburg was founded, lay buried.
  • Sherborne Guest House
    Sherborne Guest House is situated between Colesberg and Middelburg on the N9 + N10 route – 80km south from Colesberg and 17km north of Middelburg. The guest house is about 500m from the route above and is between numerous trees and hills. Come and enjoy your vacation on a true Karoo farm.
  • Middelburg 3 Memorial
    Erected in memory of three Middelburg rebels who died during their rebellion against the re-location to a new township and housing scheme.
  • Anglican Church
    The St Barnabas Church, a historical building is still in use for weekly sermons. It is build with stone, and the original bell can still be viewed in the garden.
  • Karoo Country Inn
    KAROO COUNTRY INN, a beautifully restored Cape Victorian Hotel, is ideally situated between Johannesburg, Durban and the Garden Route, Port Elizabeth or Cape Town. We offer a total of 23 spacious, air-conditioned en-suite rooms, secure parking, a conference centre and free wi-fi. Our guests have a choice between our upgraded, selfcatering or economy rooms.   • Burger Monument
    This graceful obelisk was erected in 1929 to honour the memory of 19 Burghers who fell during the Anglo Boer War. Can be seen in the Mayor’s Garden. Mayor’s Garden, Meintjies Street.
  • British Officer’s Mess
    Many old students know the Officer’s Mess, situated on the grounds of the Grootfontein College of Agriculture as a former hostel named House Karoo. The mess dates from the Anglo Boer War period (1903 – 1910) and was one of many corrugated iron-and-wood structures that belonged to a vast British Military encampment on the farm, Grootfontein. Both its façade and ground plan closely resemble two other famous old Officer’s Messes; viz The Wynberg Officer’s Mess and the Jan Smut’s House, Doornkloof, Irene.
  • Market Square
    The market square was encircled by Murray-, Market-, Van Reenen- and Loop Streets. On the Outspan, originated the Dutch Reformed Church, Gereformeerde Kerk, Methodist Church and the Town Hall. Today, part of it is known as the Mayor’s Garden. The Old Waterpump, Burger Monument, Steam Roller and Wall of Remembrance can all be found in the Mayor’s Garden.
